About this facility

Houghton House Addiction & Mental Health Treatment Centres are dedicated to helping people improve their mental health and wellbeing through attentive 24/hour nursing care and integrated psychotherapeutic therapies. They’ve celebrated 28 years of impactful addiction treatment. They focus on every patient’s specific needs, and strive to deliver excellent clinical outcomes through individually-tailored treatment plans. Their purpose is to make a real and lasting difference in their patients’ lives. Houghton House offers a full spectrum of licensed treatment for all addictive disorders and associated problems, including drug and alcohol addictions, gambling and internet addictions, and sugar addiction. Their newly renovated dual-diagnosis centre has dual registration as a psychiatric hospital and rehabilitation centre. Their treatment programmes begin with a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s needs. Houghton offers short and long-term residential treatment, outpatient services, ongoing aftercare, relapse prevention, and halfway house accommodation (sober living options). When needed, medications are administered safely and professionally. They operate on the belief that alcoholism/addiction are a recognised and diagnosable disease, not a moral failing. As such, their multidisciplinary team strives to create an environment where patients feel respected and their dignity can be restored. Before patients embark on any treatment programme, they undergo a comprehensive professional assessment by one of Houghton House’s experienced clinical staff. This helps ensure their recommended treatment programme meets the patient’s requirements. The assessment process is designed to ascertain their current and past substance use history, family support, psychiatric, psychological, and motivational status. Houghton House’s 30-day residential programme provides a solid foundation for those requiring medical detoxification and/or a more intensive therapeutic treatment environment. This highly structured programme is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and addiction counsellors. Clients receive therapy in group, individual, and family environments with regular psychiatric consultations and frequent individual therapy with an addiction-focused therapist. Houghton House provides cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing techniques for comprehensive healing. They additionally offer biokenetics, occupational therapy, and other allied health care support. Their tranquil facility is in a private, contained location to help preserve physical, psychological, and emotional health. Their General Addiction Programme is Houghton House’s extended inpatient care programme, specifically geared towards individuals who have completed a detox and primary care programme, whether at Houghton House or another facility. It runs on a month-to-month basis with the suggestion of three months as an ideal treatment period. Clients remain on site with round-the-clock support and continued therapy. The First Step Outpatient Programme has been designed for individuals with substance use disorders, but financial stresses, legal issues, work obligations and/or family responsibilities make it impractical for them to attend an inpatient programme. Houghton House’s Aspen and York Halfway Houses are tertiary care facilities, focusing on patients who have completed a residential treatment programme and are now committed to a long-term structure supporting clean living. During this stage, residents re-integrate into the working environment or look for employment. Offered after completion of their programme, intensive aftercare and relapse prevention programming can be done whilst in the Halfway House or once the patient returns home. Treatment at Houghton House is recognized and covered by many medical aids for primary, extended care, and outpatient programmes.
