Understanding Addiction Treatment Options

Finding the right treatment center is one of the most important decisions in the recovery process. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2023), approximately 48.7 million Americans aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the past year — yet only about 24% received any form of treatment.

Types of Treatment Programs

Medical detox is typically the first step, lasting 5–7 days under medical supervision to safely manage withdrawal symptoms. For alcohol and benzodiazepine dependence, medically supervised detox is considered essential due to potentially life-threatening withdrawal complications.

Inpatient (residential) treatment provides 24/7 structured care in a facility, usually for 28, 60, or 90 days. NIDA research shows that programs lasting at least 90 days produce significantly better long-term outcomes.

Outpatient programs — including Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization (PHP) — allow patients to live at home while attending structured therapy sessions 3–5 times per week. These are often recommended as step-down care after residential treatment.

How to Evaluate a Treatment Center

When comparing programs, consider these key factors:

  • Licensing and accreditation — Look for CARF or Joint Commission accreditation
  • Evidence-based approaches — CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and MAT are gold-standard treatments
  • Staff qualifications — Licensed counselors, psychiatrists, and medical professionals
  • Insurance acceptance — Most programs accept major insurance under the Mental Health Parity Act
  • Aftercare planning — Strong programs include discharge planning and ongoing support

Use the search filters above to find programs that match your specific needs, or browse by state to find options near you.
